- GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024 -

We are pleased to announce that our design for "Akitsu Tosaizane Coffee" has been awarded the 2024 Good Design Award in Unit 14 - Architecture (Industrial/Commercial Facilities Category).

It has been about six years since the renewal of Akitsu Tosaizane Coffee, which was prompted by the heavy rains in western Japan. Since then, they have been actively engaged in various activities, such as coffee classes, the development of new local brand products, and the beginning of coffee cultivation on nearby islands.

At that time, our idea of "recovery" was not merely a restoration to the original state, but rather a reconstruction of the machiya culture.

After these six years, we are thrilled to receive this award, not just for its external design but for how it has evolved into "living architecture" through careful observation.

Judges' Comments:

The guest space, situated between the roasting workshop and the living room, connects the business and the residence, while the roasting workshop, located between the main street and the guest space, connects the community and the shop in a clear format as a combined residence and commercial facility. Each area is subtly segmented by elements such as fully openable wooden doors, coffee shelves without backboards, and curtains, yet visually connected. This creates a highly attractive scene where public, private, commercial, and residential functions mix. The sight of smoke from the roasting machine and the shopkeeper working on the street side creates a dynamic landscape that enlivens the local daily life. Additionally, the fact that the guest space serves not only as a venue for community interaction but also as a living space for the shopkeeper and his mother seems to contribute positively. This is a model of close proximity between workplace and residence, and we hope it will spread to other regions.
